The files are a combination of correspondence and reports related to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), its officers, projects, finance, and institutions. Correspondents include Bishops Sebastian Kolowa and Stefano Moshi and Executive Secretary Joel Ngeiyamu. There are individual files for each synod and diocese of the ELCT. Many of the reports were generated by the Lutheran Coordination Service (see TALC 14/6/7 and LWM 1/10/11). The records were collected by James L. Knutson, TALC secretary for Africa and Madagascar.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
